Mumbai: Bollywood actress Kriti Sanon has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of her personality rights. The actress has filed a petition to prevent the unauthorized use of her name, face, voice and photographs without her permission.
The matter has brought attention to the growing concerns among celebrities regarding the misuse of their identity, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), deepfake videos and digital manipulation.
Court hearing scheduled for October 29
During the hearing on Friday, the Delhi High Court asked Kriti Sanon’s legal team to submit a detailed compilation of judgments and research related to personality rights. The court also sought clarity on whether its Intellectual Property Division (IP Division) has the jurisdiction to hear such matters.
With an increasing number of public figures approaching courts for protection of their personality rights, the next hearing in Kriti’s case has been scheduled for October 29. The court will consider further action after reviewing the submitted documents.
Need to present relevant legal documents
According to reports, Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav asked Kriti Sanon’s lawyer Praveen Anand to prepare and submit relevant judicial decisions and research material related to personality rights.
The lawyer informed the court that the required documents would be submitted on the same day and clarified that there was no issue regarding the court’s jurisdiction in Kriti’s case.
Several celebrities have sought legal protection earlier
Kriti Sanon is not the first celebrity to approach the court over personality rights. Several well-known personalities have previously taken legal action to protect their identity from unauthorized commercial or digital use.
Actors and public figures including Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Tabu, Kangana Ranaut, Vijay Deverakonda, cricketers and other public personalities have also raised concerns over misuse of their names, images and personal identities.
Why personality rights have become a major issue
The debate around personality rights has gained importance with the rapid growth of AI technology and deepfake content. Fake videos and manipulated images of celebrities are increasingly being created and circulated on social media platforms.
Many celebrities have faced situations where their faces and voices were misused, sometimes in inappropriate or misleading content. The growing threat of AI-generated fake content has pushed public figures to seek stronger legal protection for their identity and reputation.
Kriti Sanon’s case highlights the changing digital landscape
Kriti Sanon’s petition reflects the challenges celebrities face in protecting their personal identity in the digital era. As technology continues to evolve, legal battles over personality rights are expected to become more common, with courts playing a crucial role in defining the limits of digital usage.
