Manoj Bajpayee Calls Bollywood ‘Bullshit’, Says There Is No Brotherhood or Genuine Support in the Industry

Mumbai: National Award-winning actor Manoj Bajpayee has spoken candidly about his experience in the film industry, challenging the popular belief that Bollywood functions like one big family. During an interview while promoting his Netflix film Gajab Raat, the actor described the industry as “bullshit” and said that people rarely appreciate one another or celebrate each other’s success.

After spending more than three decades in the industry, Bajpayee said he has never truly felt that he belongs to it. The actor, who made his film debut with Bandit Queen in 1994, also highlighted the need for equality on film sets, better interaction among actors and a more inclusive working environment.

‘The Film Industry Is Not a Family’

Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Manoj Bajpayee said the idea of Bollywood being one big family is a misconception. He explained that an actor does not need to belong to a particular neighbourhood or social circle to succeed, adding that the quality of one’s work matters more than anything else.

According to Bajpayee, people in the industry often operate independently. Actors rarely get together outside work, and even when someone likes another person’s film, they may not reach out to appreciate it.

The actor suggested that the industry’s public image of unity does not always reflect the reality of professional relationships behind the scenes.

‘Nobody Is Happy About Someone Else’s Success’

Bajpayee also expressed his disappointment with what he sees as a lack of genuine appreciation within Bollywood. He said actors are not necessarily happy when their colleagues succeed, directors do not like being considered inferior to their peers, and production houses may feel uncomfortable when competing banners earn more money.

The actor urged people not to assume that the industry is naturally supportive or united. His remarks reflect his personal experience of working in the film business over several decades.

‘I Do My Work, Take My Money and Go Home’

Explaining how he approaches his career, Bajpayee said he does not allow either criticism or praise to influence him too much. He believes that everyone ultimately has to face their own struggles and take responsibility for their journey.

The actor, who won a National Film Award for Gulmohar in 2024, said he focuses on doing his work, receiving his payment and returning home rather than seeking emotional attachment to the industry.

He also made it clear that people should be prepared to fight their own battles because help may not always come when it is needed. If someone does offer support, he suggested, it should be considered fortunate rather than something to be expected.

Manoj Bajpayee Stresses the Importance of Discipline

The The Family Man actor also discussed the role of discipline in building a career. He said being disciplined helps professionals prepare for challenges and remain focused on their work.

However, Bajpayee acknowledged that not everyone follows the same approach. Some actors may be less disciplined and still receive appreciation and earn substantial money. He emphasised that discipline is a personal choice and that he prefers to maintain it in his own life, a habit he says dates back to childhood.

Actors Spend More Time in Vanity Vans Than Together on Sets

When asked what bothers him most about the film industry, Bajpayee pointed to unequal treatment on sets and the declining interaction among actors.

Remembering earlier years, he said performers would often sit together between shoots, talk for hours and spend time with one another when their schedules allowed. He believes that this culture has changed, with many actors now retreating to their vanity vans and spending their free time on social media.

Bajpayee stressed that every film set should ensure equal treatment for everyone, including providing the same food to all. He also called for actors to spend more time interacting with their colleagues instead of remaining isolated.

His comments offer a glimpse into the concerns of an actor who has spent over 30 years in the industry and continues to advocate for a more equal and collaborative working environment.
