Mumbai: The much-awaited sequel to the 2011 cult comedy Delhi Belly is still facing hurdles, despite continued efforts by its makers to bring the project to life. Director Abhinay Deo has revealed that he regularly discusses the possibility of making Delhi Belly 2 with Aamir Khan and comes up with new ideas for the sequel. However, a major challenge related to the film’s production and its original style continues to complicate matters. The filmmaker remains hopeful that the project can eventually move forward.
Why Is Delhi Belly 2 Facing a Major Hurdle?
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Abhinay Deo revealed that he frequently comes up with ideas for the sequel but faces certain technical and production-related challenges. The original Delhi Belly was produced by UTV, and actor Imran Khan had reportedly been keen on taking the story forward with another instalment.
However, the situation changed after Disney took over UTV. According to the director, getting the sequel approved could be complicated because of the film’s distinctive content and language.
Delhi Belly was known for its adult humour, strong language and unconventional storytelling. Deo suggested that if Disney agrees to produce the sequel, there could be pressure to remove the profanity and make the film more family-friendly. Such changes, he indicated, could be difficult given the original film’s character and style.
The Original Film Took Nine Years to Write
Deo also spoke about the time it took to develop the first instalment. According to the director, Akshat Verma spent nine years writing Delhi Belly.
This raises another question about the sequel: how long will it take to develop a script that lives up to the original film? The director acknowledged the challenge but made it clear that the team has not abandoned the idea.
Deo said he continues to explore possibilities for the project and remains in regular contact with Aamir Khan. He revealed that he speaks to the actor-producer almost every month to discuss the sequel and share fresh ideas.
What Does Aamir Khan Say About the Sequel?
Recounting his conversations with Aamir Khan, Deo explained that he often calls the actor and asks whether they can finally make Delhi Belly 2.
According to the director, Aamir’s response is usually along the lines of asking him to get in touch with Akshat Verma and encourage the writer to complete the script. Deo believes Verma may already be working on the screenplay, although there is no confirmed timeline for its completion.
The filmmaker’s comments indicate that discussions around the sequel are continuing, but the project has yet to receive a definitive green light.
Abhinay Deo Is Also in Touch With Imran Khan
Apart from his conversations with Aamir Khan, Deo revealed that he remains in regular contact with Imran Khan. The director said he had previously discussed another film project with the actor, one that was completely different from Delhi Belly.
However, Imran was busy with another film at the time and could not take up the project.
Released in 2011, Delhi Belly featured Imran Khan, Vir Das and Kunal Roy Kapur. Produced by Aamir Khan, the film developed a strong cult following for its irreverent humour, memorable music and unconventional narrative. Fans have been waiting for a sequel for years, but the latest developments suggest that the makers still have significant hurdles to overcome before Delhi Belly 2 can become a reality.
